Eastern & Southern AfricaCountry :MalawiStatus :ClosedGrant Number :244Grant Amount (USD):1 500 000Commitment Date:2008Closing Date:2013Introduction:At its 37th Regular Meeting, in May 2007, the Executive Board approved a grant of US$ 1.5 million to the Government of Malawi for the establishment of a macroeconomic policy institute which will provide the government with economic policy research and analysis as well as offer it impartial advice.
Project Description:The goal of the project is to strengthen public policy research and analysis in Malawi. Its expected results are to: i) build Malawi’s national capacity in public policy research and analysis to support policy makers and other stakeholders (through rigorous research and policy analysis); ii) build the capacities of other national research institutions in Malawi and provide technical support and advisory services to non-state actors in policy research and analysis (through training, fellowship programs, internships, attachments, study tours/exchange visits); iii) raise public awareness of development issues in Malawi (through dissemination, publication, networking/outreach and policy dialogue/discussion forum); iv)strengthen the policy dialogue platform that was institutionalized by the National Economic Council project enabling effective participation of all stakeholders; and v) establish a Malawi Directorate of Macroeconomic Policy Research and Analysis (through procurement, training, and infrastructure development).
